Most business ideas fail because nobody checked whether anyone wanted them. This 12-page guide gives you a structured way to validate an idea using free AI tools: market research prompts, competitor mapping, interview prep, and a go/no-go checklist. Includes a worked example that ends in 'stop' — because sometimes the right answer is not to build.

Common questions
Questions this guide answers.
How do I validate a business idea before building it?
Start by trying to disprove it. Use free AI tools to scan the market (Perplexity, ChatGPT), map your competitors, and prepare structured interviews with ten potential customers. The guide gives you a five-question go/no-go checklist: is the problem real, is it frequent, will people pay, can you reach them, and can you deliver profitably? If three or more answers are no, stop.
Can AI help me research my business idea?
Yes, for the scanning phase. AI tools can summarise market reports, list competitors, identify pricing patterns, and draft interview questions in minutes. What AI can't do is tell you whether your specific customers will pay — that requires actual conversations. The guide gives you prompts for each research stage and explains where AI's answers become unreliable.
How do I know if my startup idea is worth pursuing?
The guide uses a five-factor test: problem severity (does it hurt enough?), frequency (does it happen often?), willingness to pay (will they spend money, not just nod?), reachability (can you find these people?), and deliverability (can you serve them profitably?). Score each factor honestly. The guide includes a worked example of a dog-walking app that fails the test — and explains why stopping early is the right call.
What free tools can I use for market research?
Perplexity (free tier) for market scanning and competitor discovery. ChatGPT or Claude (free tiers) for drafting interview questions and summarising responses. Ubersuggest free tier for search volume data. All three are covered in the guide with specific prompts and instructions. Total cost: £0.
